The medicine Buddha Bhaishajya Thathagata wears a monk's robe, his body is shiny like lapis. His residence is in the Eastern world of purified Lapis. In his left hand he holds an alms bowl filled with the medical medicinal plant Arura. With the right hand he symbolically gives the Arura plant in Varada-Mudra (gesture of giving) to the needy and sick. Before attaining enlightenment, he made twelve vows, the most important of which was to keep all illnesses away from all sentient beings, to make them happy on the path to enlightenment, and to free them from mischief and misfortune. He is called upon to overcome the three mental poisons of greed, hatred and delusion.
The short version of his mantras is "Om Bhaisajye Bhaisajye Maha Bhaisajye Radsha Samungate Svaha".
