Tibetan Thangka - Medicine Buddha

These sacred images can be found in monasteries and in private rooms of Tibetans. 

The thangka represents Bhaishajya Thathagata as the Medicine Buddha. Bhaishajya Thathagata wears a monk's robe, his body is shiny like lapis. He is assisted by two Bhodisattvas named Suryapralha and Candraprabha. He holds in his left hand the medicinal plant Arura and in his right hand this plant in Varada-Mudra (gesture of giving). Before attaining enlightment, he made 12 vows, the most important of which was to keep all illnesses away from all sentient beings, to make them happy on the path to enlightment, and to free them from suffering and misfortune.
